National Science Foundation: Coupling of PARFLOW and CrunchFlow for High Resolution Reactive Transport Modeling of Variably Saturated Flow

In collaboration with Reed Maxwell (CSM) and Carl Steefel (LBL) we are working on coupling the reactive transport numerical simulator CrunchFlow with the integrated watershed surface water - groundwater flow simulator to provide unprecedented parallel capabilities for simulating geochemically reactive environments where surface water and groundwater exchange is an important process. This numerical tool will provide us with the ability to model such processes as C,N exchange in hyporheic zones and long-term weathering, climate feedbacks. Current capabilities include simulation of kinetic geochemical reactions in heterogenous porous media (movie to the right shows a reaction front moving through a geostatistically distributed permeability field).
